Getting to know Stretford

Investigating Site and Context

Located in the north of Trafford Borough Stretford is often perceived as a forgotten neighbourhood, often perceived to be receiving less investment and focus than southern towns within the borough.

'Stretford's been left behind, we've seen huge regeneration efforts in Sale and Urmston town centres but residents here feel the town's needs have just been ignored'

Councilor Tom Ross, Stretford Ward

STRETFORD PUBLIC HALL

From the northern edge of the site you can glimpse views of Stretford Public Hall, a dialogue I wish to continue with my design.

ROADS

The site is bordered on two sides by consistently busy high volume roads, one of which being a main route from the ring road into the city centre

CANAL

The Bridgeford Canal runs down the East side of the site offering a tranquil water side space to relax or use to walk from the city centre towards Sale.

CENTRE

The site sits in what could be considered as the corner of the town centre adjacent to the Public Hall and Mall

GREEN SPACE

There is considerable vegetation surrounding two edges of the site offering some acoustic and pollution barrier from the roads.

PARKING

The car park is well used during the day mainly by commuters using the Metro, residents feel this fills up spaces which could be used by visitors to the town.

ISSUES

FEATURES

PHOTO ELEVATIONS

The site is mainly level with a very gradual slope down towards the canal, The vegetation between the site and the subway however is substantially raised, helping create a barrier next to the road.
