Following our two days’ public participation in Stretford Mall where our practice spoke to over 150 locals, mentions of certain needs began to reoccur more and more.
TOWN CENTRE
I hope to increase the recognisability and navigability of the current town centre. Many residents missed the old high street, I would therefore like to manipulate the circulation of my site to try and recreate a replica high street
FRESH FOOD SHOPS
Currently the only food available in Stretford is within the Mall and mainly consists of frozen food provision or packaged cupboard food. Although Tesco stocks fresh food residents would prefer to support independent business when purchasing food. I hope to offer facilities to provide availability of fresh food to residents.
PUBLIC TOILETS
Currently the only public toilets are provided within the mall and Stretford Library, which both have limited opening times. Many residents expressed concern that these facilities were not adequately maintained therefore I feel it would be helpful to provide an additional provision of 24 hour fully accessible public toilets.
STREETLIGHTS
Due to the lack of evening entertainment Stretford is often deserted after 6pm leaving residents reluctant to leave the house after dark. Inclusion of better street lighting along a main circulation passage way would increase night time circulation and perception of safety/night occupation.

Public Participation Event Findings
The following diagram illustrates the percentage of the public voicing the need for specific typologies. Each typology has then been broken down, where possible, into individual buildings/facilities. It became clear that there was a strong desire for more independent shops and entertainment facilities. Although my project may not be able to address all requests I feel the red selection may be achievable as a variety of needs may be met with a singular built solution.
